How Lighting Affects The Outcome Of Your Hair Color
We’ve all been there. You leave a Boise hair salon with a fabulous new hair color, only to start freaking out about how different it looks at home. In the salon, your wonderful color seemed like it was a whole different tone. What gives?
At unDONE Salon, we’ve heard this before. That’s why we’d like to take some time to discuss how different lighting affects the outcome of your hair color.
Natural Light Vs. Artificial Light
To be blunt, it’s important to understand that you are NEVER going to look exactly the same in every single light. This includes natural and artificial sunlight.
At the salon, the best way to get an accurate impression of your new hair color is to ask your stylist for a hand mirror and find some natural light by going outside or standing near a window. If you like how it looks, you’ll probably like it everywhere.
What you don’t want to do is ask your stylist to fix your hair color in a way it won’t look different in the sunlight. Nobody can change the way you look in natural light. The sun is the sun…
Don’t Trust Instagram
Often we have clients bring in a picture of their favorite celebrity that’s taken under professional lights and they think their hair color looks a specific shade. What people often don’t realize is that there is a wide variety of different lights that can make your hair appear darker or lighter. Even more, a flash can drastically change the appearance of a celebrities hair and dim lighting can give it a warmer effect. But that’s not what their hair actually looks like.
While we love it when our clients bring in a picture to show us what their hoping to achieve, the catch here is lighting. Don’t get us wrong, pictures help us tremendously. However, if the picture is taken outside, it’s going to have a different tone than if it was taken inside. The same principle applies whether a picture was taken in a bathroom, kitchen or under fluorescent lights in a grocery store. When you are talking to your Boise hair salon stylist during a consultation, make sure to mention anything you may or may not like about a certain color from the picture you are showing them.
