Most of our Boise hair salon stylists here at unDONE have done MANY color corrections during our careers. While it can be a long and grueling process, the end results are always worth it if you’ve ever had a color catastrophe.

Understanding Color Correction

There are a wide variety of color corrections, but two of the most common are making really dark hair lighter, or making really light hair darker. Have you ever visited your stylist after dying your hair with a dark box color and wanted to go blonde? Lightening your hair after using a dark DIY color on your hair isn’t always as easy as you may think.

Your hair will need to be bleached. This can take several appointments to maintain the health and integrity of your hair without damaging it. Furthermore, after using a box dye, your hair is more prone to lift unevenly with reddish and orange tones. That’s why we’d like to provide you with a summary of what you should know to make an educated decision when it comes to choosing a professional hair color over a box dye.

Why We Don’t Recommend Box Dye

Unpredictable & Undesirable Results

Many things contribute to the outcome of your hair color. Previous color services, formula, application, and the condition of your hair are just a few of them. When it comes to box color, it’s a “one size fits all” solution that doesn’t factor in any of these elements. It doesn’t matter what your hair condition is or what’s been done to it in the past. Instead, box dye provides the same solution and developer for everyone. This can result in an unknown hair color that you may not like and can damage your hair in the process.

For example, if someone has dark brown hair and wants to dye it bright blonde, they will not achieve the results they want by grabbing a box of dye at the grocery store. If they do they will most likely end up with orange or yellow hair and very brassy undertones.
