Reflection: My Destiny Rescue Mission to Thailand Part 3

Mission Part 3

The Destiny Rescue prevention home not only takes in children considered to be at high risk but provides a home for other children from far away villages in need of an education whose parents are unable to take them to school. Often times these children live at the Destiny Rescue home during the week but return home only on the weekends or holidays. While we were unaware of each of their individual stories, every child was special and very loved, and in their eyes we are like superheroes to them.

There was one little girl in particular that caught my attention. At only eight years old, she enjoyed spending time with me and having her picture taken. Together we took pictures, played and hugged. The children there are so full of love. After getting to know, and spending time with her, my heart told me to ask about her. I later found out that she’d only been at the Destiny Rescue home two days prior to me meeting her. She was my rescue, and now I am proud to say she is my sponsor child.

Upon visiting each of these homes, I found myself asking, “Why?” Why in America do we often turn a blind eye to these children. What is it that makes us any better than them? The only difference is that they were born into a society in need of better education. They are hard working people, and there is no welfare to support them. Their only means of survival is to work as education is rarely available. I understand that while those in need of help choose to live, they did not choose to live the lives they were given, and it hurts my heart knowing there are really no answers to any of my questions.

When it was time to leave, each hug broke my heart. I had fallen in love with every person and child I had encountered. Having returned home, I can’t help but feel that I left my heart in Thailand. Do I plan on going back? Yes, indeed. My Destiny Rescue trip not only changed who I am but my faith as well. In reality it was very hard to come back to America and do hair without any real purpose. My purpose now is to help the Destiny Rescue Salon and Tina Cairo in any way I can. The Destiny Rescue salon there has to thrive in order to make an impact for those in need. As the owner of a salon, I understand what it takes for a business to survive, especially one that has such a mission and purpose. I am proud to say the Undone in Boise, Idaho now has a sister salon in Thailand.

In reflection, I encourage other stylists and salons to get involved. We have a gift, and we need to share it with others in order to build a stronger bond with other stylists from around the world. Its not about how good we are, if we cut hair on stage, how many salons we own or how much money we make. Its about sharing our passion and helping one another become successful.
