What Is Balayage?
Most often, the question is, “how do you say it?” BAH-LEE-AHGE, balayage is the french term “to sweep” or sweeping. As a hairstylist, this meaning is to freehand paint using a sweeping motion, creating soft, natural graduation of lightness to the ends of the hair.
How Does Balayage Differ From Ombre?
Ombre is a more horizontal placement, and balayage is more vertical. Ombre is more of a type of style as to where balayage is a technique.
How Is Balayage Different From Highlights?
Highlights follow a more structured pattern and are carefully placed. Balayage is free-hand painted onto the hair in large sections. Highlights are done by saturating the section of hair from the roots to ends. Balayage is done by painting the lightener from midshafts to ends.
Does Balayage Cost More?
In most cases, balayage does cost more using more product and taking more time to process due to open-air lightening as highlights are in foils locking in heat.
Is There A Difference In Maintaining Balayage Vs Highlighting?
Highlights are most often touched up every six weeks. Balayage usually can be touched up 3-4 months with a toner to freshen your look in between sessions every 4-6 weeks. Due to balayage focusing on the ends, which is the older hair, and in larger sections, it is beneficial to do conditioning treatments either at home or with your Boise hair salon stylist. If you want to go much lighter, there are hair extensions that have lighter ends already.
