Boise Hair Salon Tips: How to Clean Your Styling Tools

As any Boise hair salon stylist will tell you, clean styling tools not only work better, they are easier to use and better on your hair. Styling tools and hair brushes collect hair and product buildup on a regular basis. If they get overly matted or coated with styling products, they won’t work like they should and can leave old residue in your hair. That’s why it’s important to keep your styling tools clean and performing their best to keep your hair looking healthy and beautiful.

Hair Brushes & Combs

From hairspray to scalp oils, your hairbrush collects a variety of residues, germs, and other random particles. You don’t want to brush all that gunk onto your freshly washed hair! That’s why it’s important to clean your brush and combs at least once a week.

  • To clean a hairbrush, use a pair of scissors to lift away and cut away hair from the base.

  • Once you’ve removed as much hair as possible, run your brush under warm water and apply some clarifying shampoo to the bristles and base.

  • Next, use an old toothbrush to gently scrub the base and bristles to eliminate any built-up hair product.

  • Once your brush has been scrubbed clean, rinse it with warm water before patting it dry with a towel. Allow your brush to finish air-drying overnight.

*Combs don’t catch as much hair as brushes but they do build up with styling products. Just follow the same cleaning process found above for any comb type.  

Curling Irons & Flat Irons

Sticky product buildup on your curling and flat irons can not only burn your hair, it can cause unwanted bad hair days. That’s why it’s important to keep your hot tools in tip-top condition by keeping them clean of unwanted residue.

  • When cleaning your curling or flat irons, it’s important to make sure they are unplugged and completely cool to the touch.

  • Use a cotton ball and rubbing alcohol to wipe away any built-up styling product from the barrel or flat of the iron.

  • Next, use a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol to wipe away any trapped residue from the tiny crevices of your styling tool.

  • To finish, wipe down all the surfaces of your curling or flat iron down with a clean, slightly damp cloth, and allow to air-dry.

Hair Dryers

Clogged, hair dryer filters is something most people are guilty of. Unfortunately, lint and dirt block the ventilation needed for it to work properly. That’s why it’s important to clean the filter regularly to keep your hair dryer working properly.

  • First, make sure your hair dryer is unplugged and locate the air vent on the back or side.

  • Remove the vent cover to get to the filter.

  • Using a toothpick or tweezers, remove any large pieces of lint from the filter.

  • Next, scrub away any leftover dust using a dry toothbrush.

  • Replace the filter and vent cover. Then plug the hair dryer in and let it blow for a few seconds.
